Kai Sun is a Chinese-American costume designer, theater artist, filmmaker, and fine artist based in LA and NYC. Born and raised in the Bay Area, he received a Drama BFA from NYU Tisch School of the Arts under the Playwrights Horizons Theater School and Production and Design Studio with a minor in Film Production. His work aims to investigate the intricate relationship between the personal and the world, often seeking out power, opportunity, and magic in the mundane as a means of re-imagining our constructions of truth.
Kai’s work has been seen in venues of all sizes, from off-Broadway to film festivals. In 2024, his costume design work for the TV pilot Marvin Is Sorry was shown at the SXSW Film & TV Festival, which won the Independent TV Pilot Competition Jury Award. In 2025, he assistant costume designed the critically acclaimed All Nighter Off-Broadway production at MCC Theater.
