Kai Sun is a Chinese-American costume designer, theater artist, filmmaker, and fine artist based in LA and NYC. Born and raised in the Bay Area, he received a Drama BFA under the Playwrights Horizons Theater School and Production and Design Studio at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts with a minor in Film Production. His work aims to investigate the intricate relationship between the personal and the world, often seeking out power, opportunity, and magic in the mundane as a means of re-imagining our constructions of truth.

Kai’s designs have been featured across a wide range of venues, from Off-Broadway stages to major film festivals. In 2024, his costume design work for the TV pilot Marvin Is Sorry was showcased at the SXSW Film & TV Festival, which won the Independent TV Pilot Competition Jury Award. In 2025, he served as assistant costume designer for the critically acclaimed Off-Broadway production of All Nighter at MCC Theater, starring Kristine Frøseth, Havana Rose Liu, and Julia Lester. Most recently, he assisted on the Off-Broadway play DIlaria, starring Christopher Briney, at DR2 Theater. Kai was also selected as one of four costume designers to join Year 3 of Issa Rae’s ColorCreative Find Your People cohort in 2025.
